Message from the President
Bernie from Switzerland

To say that this has been quite a year is an understatement. Financial turmoil around the world has increased stress levels along with fear and despair for many. It's times like these that makes what we do as coaches so important. We know that security truly comes from the power within us.

Every day we have the opportunity to choose thoughts of empowerment and success or chose thoughts of defeat and despair.

Imagine for a moment holding a glass of dirty water filled with particles, sand and dirt. If we begin filling it with clean water from the faucet, it will eventually overflow pushing out the dirty water, leaving us with a glass of crystal clear water. Our lives work similarly. Dwelling on what we can't do, don't have or how we'll never accomplish our dreams is like the murky glass of water with toxic waste that can contaminate our lives. As coaches, we can help our clients to go on a "fast" from their negative, self-defeating thoughts to ones of victory, confidence and empowerment.

We appreciate all the feedback and suggestions that you have given us this past year. 2009 will focus on the best ways of promoting yourself and your practice, as well as a new emphasis on ICF Core Competencies. The Core Competencies were developed to support greater understanding about the skills and approaches used within today's coaching profession. They are the foundation for the ICF credentialing examination: Setting the Foundation; Co-creating the Relationship; Communicating Effectively and Facilitating Learning and Results.

Our own Past President, Ira Dressner, who is an ICF Examination Assessor, has agreed to present an interactive core competencies program in May. And mark your calendars for a special Saturday workshop on March 14 where Madeleine Homan of The Scott Blanchard Companies will be discussing her new book, Coaching in Organizations, for those that have an interest in corporate coaching.

And finally, please join us at our regularly scheduled meeting on January 21 for Sandy Schussel's workshop, "Get more clients; get better clients and keep your client's longer." Sandy will be providing a workbook as well as a copy of one of his recently published books to attendees!

HACE's New York Career Conference
Thursday, March 12, 2009; 10:30am - 12:30pm & 2:00pm - 4:30pm

Calling All Volunteers: Coaching Opportunities

We welcome you to consider being a Career Coach at the upcoming HACE (Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement) Career Conference in New York.

HACE is a 25-year old non-profit organization with programming in Miami, New York, Chicago, LA, and Houston. With the mission of "Building Latino Careers," HACE develops and ensures that Latino talent is continuously available for the market place.

Of the potential 900 job seekers attending the New York Career Conference in March at least 300 are expected to stop by the Career Help Center looking for help with their résumé or seeking career advice. HACE will provide this service free of charge during the conference and could use your experience in resume critiquing and career coaching. ICF-NYC coaches who volunteered at last year's event found this to be a rewarding experience.

Two shifts from 10:30am - 12:30pm and 2:00pm - 4:30pm will be offered. If you are able to work both shifts, HACE will give you a lunch ticket to the VIP Lunch, which will feature a dynamic keynote speaker. You are also invited to meet the exhibitors and attend the professional workshops in between your shifts.

Location: Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th Street

Information: To volunteer, contact ICF, Director of Community Outreach, Ilise Ratner, at iratner@ratnerandassociates.com. Please visit www.hace-usa.org to learn more about the organization.
