Message from the Vice President
International Coaching Week takes place the first week of February. Founded by Jerri N. Udelson, MCC, in 1999, today International Coaching Week is promoted by the International Coach Federation on a global scale with coaches from all over the world taking part in various events and programs within their communities.
This weeklong event provides a time to educate the public about the value of working with a professional coach. From February 1 - 7, ICF Chapters all over the world will be hosting special events in honor of professional coaching. During this week, coaches typically offer a variety of activities and probono services in their communities, including free coaching sessions, tele-classes, lectures and workshops.
This year ICF-NYC is partnering with Career Gear, a fantastic organization dedicated to helping men get and keep jobs. They provide career counseling, interview coaching, business clothing, and follow-up support to men actively seeking employment. Promoting job-retention and career advancement, Career Gear gets referrals from homeless shelters, welfare-to-work job training centers, and job training programs for ex-offenders, the disabled and recovering substance abusers. You can become a part of this worthy mission by volunteering your services as a coach. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Laurie Lawson at laurie@eljnyc.com, and for questions about the program, Director of Retention Services Michael Obertacz can be reached at mikeo@careergear.org.
Another organization looking for volunteer career coaches is the Hispanic Alliance Career Enhancement (HACE) Career Conference taking place on Thursday, March 12, 2009. Of the potential 900 job seekers attending the New York Career Conference in March at least 300 are expected to stop by the Career Help Center looking for help with their résumé or seeking career advice. HACE will provide this service free of charge during the conference and could use your experience in resume critiquing and career coaching. ICF-NYC coaches who volunteered at last year's event found this to be a rewarding experience. See the entry below for more information about this organization and how you can volunteer.
These are two excellent opportunities to make ICF-NYC's presence known and to fulfill our commitment to coaching and its far-reaching benefits. Join us for the best International Coaching Week kick-off ever!
And while you're out there spreading the word about coaching, don't forget to have a little fun! This month Infopreneur Guru Suzanne Falter-Barns will be telling us how to get the media to contact you. Come hear her innovative ideas on February 18, 2009. And then take advantage of a unique opportunity on February 26, 2009 to play Points of You, The Coaching Game that is sweeping the coaching world. Attendees will be given the opportunity to purchase this game at a greatly-reduced price. Read more about both events below. February - it's a short month full of exciting opportunities. See you at some, or all, of them!
ICF-NYC Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, February 18, 2009; 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Presenter: Suzanne Falter-Barns, best-selling author, Infopreneur, Business Guru
This is not as preposterous as it sounds! Join best-selling author Suzanne Falter-Barns and learn what coaches just like you did to attract calls from some of the biggest media available today. Recent studies show that 79% of all major media find their resources and story ideas from blogs and the Internet.
This is what media and publishing pundits call "Platform." and it's critical to attract and impress key decision makers. Platform also allows you to build your national audience and spread your message further, so it's an important part of any serious coaching business. But your web presence must have instant credibility and the ability to stand out from the crowded pack.
You will walk away from this dynamic presentation knowing how to:
- Gain a strong sense of what's missing in your current platform and get a firmer hold on what it should be.
- Probe issues of branding.
- Find a more powerful niche.
- Consider what a unique selling proposition might be.

ICF-NYC Special Event
Thursday, February 26, 2009; 6:30pm - 8:30pm
There's a new game in town! ICF-NYC offers you a unique opportunity to play...
Topic: Points of You, The Coaching Game
Presenter: Limor Tamir
For the last year or so a new game called Points of You has been getting a lot of attention. At the 2008 ICF Conference in Montreal the booth displaying this coaching game designed as a never-seen-before board game, including 65 coaching cards, a 200-page book, a process layout chart, and a notepad of coaching tickets, was swamped with interested coaches and ended up making the most sales of any booth there. This fabulous tool for coaches, executives, psychologists, and workshop instructors is now in New York City!
Points of You is a personal coach that you can pull out whenever you find yourself having to cope, make a decision, or just at any point along the way. It allows you to explore significant issues in your life from different perspectives, to achieve clarity, to form insights and to decide what actions to take. You can play The Coaching Game with yourself, with a partner, or a whole group of people. It can be played as a social game, creating communication and openness between participants in an exciting and extraordinary way. And it can be used as a professional tool for coaching yourself and others.
Join us on February 26 for an interactive and fun experiential workshop. Participants will leave this event with
- Three insightful new goals
- A myriad of thought-provoking, eye-opening games you can use with yourself and your clients
- A shared learning adventure with other coaches who want to work with cutting-edge tools
- An opportunity to win an expansive, one-on-one reading from Limor Tamir
Limor Tamir is an ICF-certified Personal Life Coach who received her training in Israel. Her specialty is Health and Wellness Coaching. Already a successful businesswoman, she is the United States representative of Points of You, The Coaching Game. She conducts workshops in both Israel and the United States bringing this revolutionary coaching game to coaching communities and other interested groups and individuals.
Cost: $40 - To be deducted from the cost if you decide to purchase Points of You
