2008 ICF Annual International Conference Wrap-Up
Montreal Goes Green, ICF Goes Universal and We Picked Up Another Award!

The theme of the 2008 ICF Annual International Conference was Diversity, Knowledge & Community. And your ICF-NYC Chapter made its presence known in a BIG way. Our President Bernie Siegel served on the first-ever presentation of a Chapter Best Practices Panel and shared secrets of our success. He was also a member of the committee that selected the international companies awarded the prestigious Prism Awards. Both Bernie and Board Member Laurie Lawson will be serving on ICF International Committees next year. AND we left with the 2008 Local Spirit, Global Presence - Community Activism Award for establishing a significant coaching presence in our community. We were there!

Amidst unsettling times, fallen economies, and general global unrest, ICF International found its place within the Big Picture of the Universe's future. Participants automatically became a part of Montreal's Green efforts (recycled bags, family-style water bottles, hotels within walking distance of the convention center and much more) while keynote speakers from all over the world emphasized the need for awareness and a new social consciousness. The ICF-UK shared how they went from near bankruptcy to solvency and came away with an attitude adjustment and a renewed respect for coaching. India proudly revealed their plans to make coaching a wave of the 21st Century. Vandana Shiva, one of the five most powerful communicators in Asia and founder of Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, astounded us with the interconnectedness of countries and their economies. And Peter Senge, acclaimed author and founder of the Society of Organizational Learning, wove together the principles of science, spiritual wisdom, psychology, and management to show how companies can win in the future. Thanks to these pioneering leaders and an array of breakout sessions that addressed the global view, we all left with our consciousness raised and our spirits elevated. Below are some favorite take-away ideas from members who attended:

Laurie Lawson
- When Vandana Shiva was six years old, a new revolutionary material - nylon - had just come out. When asked what she wanted for her birthday, she quickly answered "a nylon sari." Her mother said she would grant her wish but she wanted her to be aware of one thing: If she purchased a nylon sari, she would be making a millionaire richer. If she purchased a hand-woven cotton sari, somewhere a woman would be able to feed her children that night. Vandana chose the cotton sari and the rest is history. We can make those small but significant choices also.

Terry Yoffe - For me, the most exciting and heartfelt part of the conference was where coaches from all parts of the globe came together to stand up and cheer their little corner of the universe. Ultimately we cheered each other and how we as coaches are shaping the future together with one voice. And what a privilege for me as a coach to stand up when they called the United States with my colleagues of the ICF-NYC and know that we were there representing our chapter.

Bonnie Gurwicz - There was a great deal of wonderful information about Executive coaching, the different forms of executive derailment, how coaching is used not only to raise awareness in the corporate environment but as a performance enhancer. I got a lot from those but was especially drawn to the more spiritually focused breakout sessions. Although much of what I heard was not new to me, the way the concepts were expressed reinforced their importance and what an amazing opportunity we have as coaches to transform the world, one person or one company at a time.

Bernie Siegel - The inspiration that I will bring with me into the New Year came from French Buddhist Monk Matthieu Ricard who simply stated that the messenger must be the message. These are fantastic words of wisdom on how to live your life, as well as how to run your business, that will resonate to remind me of my true goals.
